Questions, Answered
Everything people actually ask us across the counter — about kratom, kava, drug tests, dosing and safety. Straight answers, including the ones that are inconvenient for us.
Drug tests
The single most-asked question we get. Here is the real answer.
Does kratom show up on a drug test?
Not on a standard one. Kratom alkaloids are not part of a standard 5-panel or 10-panel drug test, which is what the overwhelming majority of employment screening uses. Those panels look for THC, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines and PCP, plus a few more on the 10-panel — none of which kratom is.
There are tests that specifically look for it. A dedicated kratom panel exists and can detect mitragynine. It is uncommon, costs more, and is not part of routine pre-employment screening — but it is used in some clinical, legal and safety-sensitive settings.
If you are subject to testing, ask the testing provider what panel they run. Do not take a guess from a website, including this one.
Will kratom make me fail an opiate test?
Kratom is not an opiate and is not chemically an opioid in the poppy-derived sense. It should not trigger the opiate line on a standard immunoassay. False positives on any immunoassay are possible with all kinds of substances, and a confirmatory GC-MS test is what settles a disputed result.
How long does kratom stay in your system?
Estimates for mitragynine half-life vary considerably between individuals and studies, and depend on dose, frequency, body composition and metabolism. Someone who takes it daily will clear it more slowly than someone who took it once. There is no single reliable number, and any site giving you an exact figure is guessing.
Does kava show up on a drug test?
No. Kava is not screened for on standard drug panels.
Do employers test for kratom?
Almost never as part of standard screening — it would require ordering a specific additional panel. Some safety-sensitive industries and some legal or clinical contexts do. If it matters for your job, ask HR or the testing provider directly rather than relying on general information.
Kratom basics
Start here if you have never bought any.
What is kratom?
Kratom is the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a tree in the coffee family that grows in Southeast Asia. The leaves are dried and milled into kratom powder. That powder is what fills kratom capsules and kratom tablets, and what gets concentrated into kratom extracts.
Is kratom the same as kava?
No — completely different plants from opposite sides of the world. Kava is a pepper root from the South Pacific, traditionally prepared as a drink. Kratom is a leaf from a tree in the coffee family in Southeast Asia. They feel different and are used differently. We carry both, and our staff will tell you plainly which fits what you are after.
What is the difference between kratom strains and colours?
Red, green and white refer to the vein colour of the leaf at harvest and to how it was dried. As a broad generalisation, whites tend to feel brighter, reds tend to feel heavier, and greens sit between. Our lineup is built around what people are actually looking for rather than colour names — focus, energy, mood, social calm, physical comfort, sleep.
How long does kratom take to work?
Kratom powder can be felt in about 15 minutes, because there is nothing to break down. Kratom capsules usually take 30 to 45 minutes, because the capsule shell has to dissolve first.
This gap causes more problems than anything else. People take capsules, feel nothing at 20 minutes, take more, and then both servings land at once. If you take capsules, be patient.
How long does it last?
Typically a few hours, varying by person, format and serving size. Extracts and larger servings tend to last longer.
How much to take
If you read nothing else on this page, read this section.
How many kratom capsules should I take?
Start with 3 to 5 capsules. That is your entire first serving. Wait the full 30 to 45 minutes before you decide anything. Do not stack a second serving in the first hour.
How much kratom powder is one serving?
Always start with one scoop. Every bag of our kratom powder comes with a scoop — no scale, no measuring spoons, no maths. One scoop is one serving, every time. We did that on purpose, because powder should not require equipment.
What does microdosing kratom mean?
In practice it means taking the smallest serving that does anything at all and staying there — one scoop of powder, or the low end of the capsule range, taken once rather than stacked through the day. Most people who tell us kratom stopped working are taking far more than they need.
Can I take kratom every day?
You can, and plenty of people do. We would rather tell you plainly that daily use can lead to dependence, similar to caffeine and many other substances. People who use it occasionally rather than every single day generally report far fewer issues. Taking regular days off is the single most useful habit we can recommend.
Can I take kratom with coffee or alcohol?
Coffee: many people do, but both are stimulating at low servings, so the combination can feel like a lot at once. Try one or the other first. Alcohol: we would not. Do not combine kratom or kava with alcohol or sedatives.
Capsules, powder, tablets & extracts
Which format is right for you.
Kratom capsules or kratom powder — which should I buy?
- Capsules if you take it on a schedule, at work or in the car, or you cannot get past the taste.
- Powder if you want the most servings for your money and you want it to work faster.
- Both if you are like most of our regulars — powder at home, capsules in the bag.
Are kratom capsules weaker than powder?
No — same material. The difference is how fast it hits, not how much is in there. Capsules feel weaker to some people purely because onset is slower.
What are kratom extracts and should I start there?
Extracts are concentrated. Our Diamond Extracts are the strongest format we carry. This is not a starting point. Learn how the powder or capsules treat you first.
How do I make kratom powder taste better?
- Orange juice. The acidity cuts it better than anything else. This is the number one answer from our customers.
- Milk and honey. Warm it slightly and it tastes close to a matcha latte. Many people end up preferring this.
- A smoothie or chocolate milk. Thickness hides texture.
- Not plain water. It floats, clumps and coats the glass.
Can I smoke or snort kratom powder?
No. Do not. It is not designed for either, it does not work well, and both carry real risk. Kratom powder is taken by mouth.
How should I store it, and does it expire?
Sealed, cool, dark and dry — the original bag is fine. Heat, sunlight and humidity are what degrade it, not time on the shelf. Check packaging for a date, and replace it if colour or smell has clearly changed.
Safety & side effects
The parts most shops skip.
Is kratom addictive?
Regular daily use can lead to dependence, the same as it can with caffeine and many other substances, and stopping abruptly after heavy daily use can be uncomfortable. Occasional use is a very different picture from daily use. We would rather say that than sell you a bag under false pretenses.
What are the common side effects?
Nausea is the most common, and it is usually a sign of too much rather than of a problem with the product. Others reported include dizziness, constipation, headache and trouble sleeping if taken late. Almost all of it tracks with serving size, which is why we push starting low so hard.
Who should not take it?
Anyone under 21. Anyone pregnant or nursing. Anyone taking prescription medication without talking to their doctor first — interactions are a genuine consideration and not one to guess at. Anyone with a liver condition should raise both kratom and kava with a doctor before starting.
Can I drive after taking it?
The first time you take anything, you do not yet know how it lands for you. Do not plan to drive on a first serving. After that, use your judgment honestly — and never combined with alcohol.
Travel & legality
Can I fly with kratom capsules or powder?
TSA screens for security threats, not for legal supplements. The real issue is your destination — some states and some countries prohibit it, and legality is what matters when you land. Check the rules where you are going before you pack it. Keeping it in original labelled packaging is sensible.
Is kratom legal in California?
Yes, kratom is legal in California, which is where all four of our stores are. Legality varies by state and by city elsewhere in the country, and it does change — check current rules for anywhere you are travelling or shipping to.
Is kava legal?
Yes. Kava is legal to buy and sell in the United States and is served in kava bars across the country.
Kava
What does kava feel like?
Relaxed, but clear. Alcohol takes the edge off by dulling you; kava takes the edge off without taking the clarity. Your shoulders drop, you are still fully yourself. Full beginner guide here.
Why does kava make my mouth numb?
It is supposed to. A brief tingling numbness in the lips and tongue is a normal sign of properly prepared kava.
Does kava get you drunk?
No. No impairment of the alcohol kind, no memory loss, no hangover. Most people describe it as calm and clear-headed.
Where is the nearest kava bar?
If you are in San Diego County or Orange County, one of ours. We prepare kava fresh in-house every day at all four shops. Our San Diego kava bar · All locations.

What if I do not like it?
Talk to us. Our return policy is on the site, and if something is not right we would rather sort it than have you not come back.
What is the cheapest way to try before I commit?
Minis — single-serving sizes of both powder and capsules for a few dollars. Spend a little finding out what you actually prefer instead of guessing at a full bag.
Can I see a lab test?
Yes. Ask at any of our four shops and we will pull the result for what you bought. More on testing and what organic really means.
Do I have to buy online?
No, and honestly we would rather you came in the first time. You can try it, ask questions, and take home the right thing instead of the thing that looked right on a screen.
Still have a question?
Walk into any of our four Southern California shops and ask. Nobody will make you feel stupid for not knowing — everybody starts somewhere.
