Kava is one of those things people hear about three or four times before they finally try it. This is the guide we wish existed the first time somebody asked us "what is kava?" across the counter.
What is kava?
Kava is a root. It comes from a pepper plant, Piper methysticum, that grows across the South Pacific — Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Hawaii. The root is dried, ground into kava powder, and steeped in water to make a drink.
People have been drinking it for well over a thousand years. In the islands it is not a novelty or a wellness trend. It is what you drink when the day is done and people sit down together. That context matters, because it explains what kava is for better than any ingredient list can.
What does kava feel like?
The honest answer: relaxed, but clear.
Alcohol takes the edge off by dulling you. Kava takes the edge off without taking the clarity. Your shoulders drop. The knot in your chest loosens. You are still fully yourself — you can still drive home, still hold a real conversation, still remember it in the morning.
The other thing nobody warns you about: your mouth goes a little numb. Lips, tongue, tingly for a minute or two. That is completely normal and it means the kava is good, not that something is wrong.
What does kava taste like?
Earthy. Muddy. Peppery. It tastes like a root, because it is one.

Your first time in a kava bar: what actually happens
- Walk in and say you are new. Seriously. It changes the whole visit and takes the pressure off you
- Order a small. Not because we are upselling you later — because kava builds, and a small is the right first look
- Drink it fairly quickly. Kava is traditionally taken in one go rather than sipped over an hour. Sipping just extends the taste
- Wait 15 to 20 minutes. This is where new people go wrong. Kava is not instant. Give it a beat before deciding it "did not work"
- Then decide about a second. Not before
How to make kava at home with kava powder
If you want to make it yourself:
- Put your kava powder in a strainer bag with warm — not boiling — water
- Knead and squeeze it for a solid 8 to 10 minutes. This is the part people rush and it is the part that matters most
- Squeeze the bag out fully, chill it, and add coconut milk, pineapple juice, or a little honey
- Drink it in one or two goes rather than sipping
Boiling water is the most common home mistake. It damages what you paid for. Warm only.

Frequently asked questions
Is kava the same as kratom?
No. Completely different plants from completely different parts of the world. Kava is a pepper root from the South Pacific. Kratom is a leaf from a tree in the coffee family that grows in Southeast Asia. They feel different, they are used differently, and they are not interchangeable. We carry both, and our staff will tell you plainly which one fits what you are looking for.
Is kava legal?
Kava is legal to buy and sell in the United States. It is sold as a dietary supplement and consumed in kava bars across the country.
Does kava get you drunk?
No. Kava relaxes you without the impairment, memory loss, or hangover that comes with alcohol. Most people describe it as calm and clear-headed rather than intoxicated.
How long does kava last?
Generally two to four hours, with the strongest part in the first hour or so. Onset is usually 15 to 20 minutes.
Can you drive after drinking kava?
Most people do. That said, kava affects everyone a little differently, and the first time you try it you do not yet know how it lands for you. Use your judgment, especially on visit one.
Is kava safe?
Kava has a long history of traditional use. The main cautions are worth stating plainly: do not mix it with alcohol, do not mix it with sedatives, and talk to a doctor first if you have any liver condition or take medication that affects the liver. We would rather you ask than assume.
Does kava make your mouth numb?
Yes, and it is supposed to. A brief tingling numbness in your lips and tongue is a normal sign of a properly prepared kava.
